It is now seven years since the last MSMT conference, How to Publish Motoring History. Since then, the book market has changed significantly and a much larger proportion of books are now self-published. To reflect these changes we are running a new event focused on the self-publishing market, our updated programme for this event appears below, with the booking form below that:

How to get your motoring book into print

A one-day conference to inform and advise authors planning or considering self-publishing.

The morning sessions to follow the evolution of a book from a subject idea, through the business of writing, illustrations, size and format, to the options for publication. The afternoon sessions to be concerned with actual book production – design, presentation, text editing and proof reading – and marketing and distribution.

Publishers, printers, designers and other services involved in self-publishing have been invited to attend and to be available for discussion.

MORNING SESSIONS

 

9.30 – 10.00       ARRIVAL AND COFFEE

10.00 – 10.15     WELCOME                                  Ray Hutton

The chairman of the MSMT on the purpose and structure of the day.

 

10.15 – 10.30     KEYNOTE SPEECH                        Steve Cropley

The Editor-in-chief of Autocar and arch-enthusiast for all things on wheels talks of the importance of recording motoring history and the books that have inspired him.

10.30 – 11.00     CONCEPT TO REALITY                  Mark Hughes

A renowned editor and established publisher, on taking a book from concept to reality. What do you want to publish and why; identifying buyers and readers; basics to consider; when and why self-publishing may be the best option.

11.00 - 11.30     HOW AND WHERE TO PUBLISH      Richard Netherwood

A print broker and publishing consultant discusses the pros and cons of different publishing methods: traditional book publishers, partly or entirely self-financing; printers who are self-publishing specialists; print-on-demand; e-books and desktop publishing; Amazon Kindle and Apple books.

11.40 – 12.00     THE BUSINESS PLAN                    Bob Cartwright

Chartered accountant, the Treasurer of the MSMT, and a transport bibliophile, considers the financial aspects of self-publishing. It is a business like any other; profit and loss; keeping an eye on costs; unexpected extra expenditure; taxation.

12.00 – 13.00     BEEN THERE, DONE THAT             Moderator: Peter Card                                                   Ian Dussek, Michael Edwards, Chris Rees

 

Discussion group with experienced self-publishers, moderated by MSMT past chairman Peter Card. Theme: dos and don’ts, sales and distribution, publicity, reprints.

 

13.00 – 14.30     LUNCH

Buffet lunch provides an opportunity to mingle with authors, publishers and printers. Time for short visit to the British Motor Museum displays.

 

AFTERNOON SESSIONS

 

14.30 – 15.10     PUTTING YOUR BOOK TOGETHER   Giles Chapman

A prolific author and editor and MSMT Trustee, on manuscript presentation; peer review; editing; proof reading; illustrations - researching, copyright, how to supply them; title and cover blurb.

15.10 – 15.30     DESIGN AND LAYOUT                   Martin Port

A book and magazine art director and successful self-publisher on the basics of design: ratio of text and pictures; typeface selection; chapter headings and presentation; cover design.

15.30 – 16.00     SALES AND MARKETING               James Mann

An award-winning photographer and author who has published his own work covers all aspects of getting a book into the market: reviews; word-of-mouth; clubs and enthusiast gatherings; advertising; social media; distribution.

16.00 – 16.30     QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION

Questions and open discussion with the panel of speakers, MSMT Trustees, and authors and publishers in the audience.
