The winner of the 2022 Michael Sedgwick Award for the best Motoring Book of the past year was announced on 2nd October 2022 as Ian Wagstaff for Formula 1's Unsung Pioneers. The judges recognised that this was a passion project from an already accomplished motorsport writer, who had worked closely in the past with one of the key movers of BRP, Ken Gregory, probably better known as Stirling Moss's manager. Guy Loveridge, the chairman of the Society of Automotive Historians in Britain announced the result at the Society's Autumn Seminar and AGM at Towcester. Ian Wagstaff was unable to collect the award in person due to prior commitments in Scotland.
The Michael Sedgwick Award has been made every year since 2012 and is open to all books on a motoring subject and winners have covered subjects such as the architecture associated with the development of motoring, a biography of the designer of many recordbreakers and histories of marques, component manufacturers. The Trustees of the Michael Sedgwick Memorial Trust are delighted that of the 11 awards made so far, no fewer than 5, including that for 2022, have been won by books supported by the MSMT.
The Michael Sedgwick Award comprises a commemorative plaque and a £250 cheque from the MSMT. The awarding panel is drawn from members of the Society of Automotive Historians in Britain and chaired by Guy Loveridge. The winners have been:
