The County Down Trophy Races 1934 to 1936 – Donaghadee & Bangor

Author: Paul Robinson
Publisher: Robinson Books

This is Paul Robinson's third book on motorsport in Northern Ireland, The County Down Trophy Races 1934 to 1936 - Donaghadee & Bangor, supported by the Michael Sedgwick Memorial Trust. The Trust believe that this book shines the spotlight on a neglected aspect of motoring history in that the focus of previous histories in the Six Counties has been the TT races at Ards and Dundrod.

This book deals with the renewed efforts of the organisers of motorsport in Northern Ireland to attract entrants from England, Scotland, Wales and further afield to compete on closed public roads afforded by the unique legal status enjoyed by the Six Counties. Only the Isle of Man could offer competitors the same experience and the local enthusiasts were keen to ensure that Northern Ireland held the best events. The declining interest in the Ballybannon Hillclimbs with its relatively straight and unchallenging course, added urgency to this quest.

Comprehensive research by the author has unearthed photographs and records of these events that, although overshadowed by the better known TT races, were important and attracted many entrants from the rest of the United Kingdom.
