99 Not Out! MSMT supports landmark book on Craigantlet Hill Climb

Since the founding of the MSMT in 1984, the Trust's logo has appeared on a wide variety of books covering aspects of motoring history from the earliest horseless carriages through caravans, motorcycles and every form of car and many of its facets from design, style and manufacturing to its use in competition. The total of books on which the Trust's logo has appeared is now 99, with the publication of Craigantlet Hill Climb 1925 to 1947 by Paul Robinson.

In its inaugural year of 1925, Craigantlet Hill Climb was a club event organised by the Ulster Automobile Sports Club. The event reached a higher level in 1929 when it was organised on the Saturday before the RAC Tourist Trophy races at Ards. This attracted many of the TT competitors to make the most of their time in Ulster and compete in both events. When the TT races ended in 1936, it reduced the number and quality of entrants to former levels.

In 1946, the Craigantlet Hill Cimb was one of the first events to resume after the Second World War and in 1947 it cemented the place in the motorsport calendar it retains to the current day by its inclusion as a round in the inaugural RAC British Hill Climb Championship. This has restored and maintained the quality of the entry with all serious contenders for the championship making the trip across the Irish Sea.

A glance at the record holders throughout the period emphasises the quality of competitors with names such as Earl Howe, Eddie Hall in his MGs, Bert Hadley in the supercharged Austin 7 and Sydney Allard in the car of his own design.

Paul Robinson has changed the style from his previous books on the history of motorsport in Northern Ireland for this new publication with hardback covers replacing the previous softback and the landscape format enabling the photographs to be reproduced at full page size for maximum impact and interest.
